Folk, Country, and Popular 음악의 Singer and Songwriter인 Gordon Lightfoot은 1963, Europe을 여행하며, 영국의 BBC TV 방송의 Country and Western Show를 1년동안 주관 하고, 1964년 Canada로 돌아온 Gordon Lightfoot은 "Mariposa Folk Festival"에 참여를 하여 자신만의 명성을 발전시켰고,
Ian 과 Sylvia Tyson에게 "Early Mornin' Rain" 그리고 "For Lovin' Me" 두곡을 녹음하고, 그로부터 1년뒤에 Peter, Paul and Mary가 녹음을 했고, 다른 가수들 Elvis Presley, Chad and Jeremy, George Hamilton IV, The Clancy Brothers, 그리고 Johnny Mann. 또한 정평(定評) 높은 가수들, 말하자면 Marty Robbins ("Ribbon of Darkness"), Leroy Van Dyke ("I'm Not Saying"), Judy Collins ("Early Morning Rain"), Richie Havens ("I Can't Make It Anymore"), 그리고 The Kingston Trio ("Early Morning Rain"),들도 한곡 내지는 두곡을 Remake 녹음 했습니다.
Gordon Lightfoot은 60년대에 취입된 곡들인 "For Lovin' Me" 와 "Early Morning Rain"의 작곡자로 미국에 알려져 있으며, 60년대 후반, 그의 모국인 Canada에서 잘 알려져 있었던 Gordon Lightfoot은 그의 Gold 수상 Album "Sit Down, Young Stranger" 와 Hit Single, "If You Could Read My Mind 으로 1970년에 결국 미국에서도 명성을 얻게 되었다.
무려 400여곡 이상을 작곡하여 70년대의 가장 양산적인 작곡가이며 꾸준한 노력파로서 평가되는 Canada계의 Singer & Songeriter인 Gordon Lightfoot은 여러개의 골드 수상 Album들을 취입하였으며, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, 그리고 Waylon Jennings 등, Style이 다른 여러 Artist들도 그가 작곡한 곡들을 취입했었습니다.
1938년 11월 17일, Canada의 ontariown, Orillia, 에서 태어난 Gordon Lightfoot은 8~9세 때부터 피아노 수업을 받기 시작했으며, 고교 시절에 다시 기타를 배우기 시작했다. 17세 때에 처음으로 작곡을 시작한 그는 고등학교를 졸업한 후 1958년 California주 Hollywood의 Westlake 대학에서 Jazz에 관한 편집과 구성에 대하여 2년간 수업를 했으며,
Toronto로 다시 돌아 온 Lightfoot은 Bar, Club, 그리고 Coffe House 등 에서 연주 활동을 시작하였다.
1963년을 영국에서 보낸 다음 다시 Canada로 돌아와 1년 이상 활동을 중단했으나. 결국 다시 Lounge 무대에 서게 되었다. 역시 Canada의 Ian 과 Sylvia Tyson은 Gordon Lightfoot의 곡을 최초로 취입한 팀이며, Peter, Paul and Mary는 Gordon Lightfoot의 곡들인 "For Lovin' Me"와 "Early Morning Rain"으로 1965년에 최초의 Hit를 기록한 Group입니다.
United Artists Record사와 계약을 맺은 Gordon Lightfoot은 "Sunday Concert"를 Album Chart에 진입시키기까지 4질의 Album들을 취입했다. Canada에서는 곧 인정을 받게 되었지만 미국에서는 "The Way I Feel", "Ribbon of Darkness", "Canadian Railroad Trilogy", "The Last Time I Saw Her", 그리고 "Did She Mention My Name?"등 수많은 그의 걸작품들이 취입되었음에도 불구하고 60년대 말엽까지 무명으로 머물러 있었다.
1969년 말에 Warner Bros 계열의 Reprise Record사로 이적한 Gordon Lightfoot의 Reprise Record의 Debut Album에는 대 Hit Single, "If You Could Read My Mind"를 비롯하여 그의 대표적 수작들인 "Approaching Lavender", "Saturday CLothes", 그리고 "Sit Down, Young Stranger"등이 수록되어 있었습니다.
1971년에 Gold를 수상한 그 Album 이후의 Album들은 판매가 썩 잘 되는편은 못되었다. 그러나 1973년도 말의 "Sundown" Album은 순식간에 Bestseller가 되었고, "The Watchman's Gone"과 준열한 "Too Late for Praying"등이 특색을 이루었으며, "Sundown"과 "Carefree Highway"가 Hit곡 들이 되었다.
"Cold on the Shoulder" Album 으로부터는 "Rainy Day People"이 Hit Single이 되었고, "Summertime Dream"으로 부터는 "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"가 대 hit Single이 되었다.
Gordon Lightfoot의 다섯 번째 Gold 수상 Album인 "Endless Wire"에는 9년전에 처음으로 녹음했던 곡인 "The Circle Is Small(I Can See It In Your Eyes)"가 Hit곡으로 실려있다.
또한 이 Sundown, ...The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald를 Perter,Paul & Mary 의 Version으로 많이 불리워 졌습니다.
